How to Play Omaha Poker
Omaha poker is a less well-known game of poker, which also uses community cards, like Texas Hold'em. There are two versions – Omaha High and Omaha Hi/Lo, which can both be played Limit, No Limit or Pot Limit.
Omaha High
- Blind Bets: A dealer button and blind bets are used as in Texas Hold'em. The player to the left of the dealer posts the small blind (half the minimum bet) and the next player to the left posts the big blind (the minimum bet).
- Dealing the hand: Four cards are dealt to each player, face down.
- Call, raise or fold: The first player (to the left of the big blind) must choose whether to call – put in the equivalent of the big blind, raise the bet or fold his hand. Betting then continues around the table.
- The Flop: As is Texas Hold'em, the Flop consists of three cards dealt face up as community cards. This is followed by another betting round.
- The Turn: The fourth community card is dealt face up. This is followed by another betting round in which the minimum bet is doubled from the previous round.
- The River: The fifth community card is dealt face up. This is followed by another betting round in which the minimum is the same as the previous round.
- The Showdown: Cards are revealed and the best five card hand wins.
- How to win: A winning hand must use two hole cards and three community cards. If two players tie, they split the pot.
- Now you know how to play Omaha!
Omaha Hi/Lo Split or Omaha Eight or Better
In this game, the goal is dual – to get the highest and the lowest ranked hands. The game is played according to the same format as Omaha High, with four cards dealt to each player and five community cards.
- Flop, turn & river: The third, fourth and fifth community cards are dealt, with betting rounds in between.
- Two winners: In this version of the game, there can be two winners, with the highest and the lowest hands winning. The two players then split the pot.
- Low hand: To qualify as a low hand, there must be no cards higher than an eight.
- Lowest combination: The lowest possible hand is A-2-3-4-5, also called a ‘Wheel’. Aces can either be high or low in this game.
- Scoop the Pot: To win the whole pot, a player must get both the highest and lowest hands; or have the highest hand when no low hand is possible.
- Counterfeiting: A pair cannot form part of a low hand, although a straight or a flush can.
- Hands: Players must use two cards from their hole cards and three from the community cards to make their hand.
This is an exciting game with many possibilities that takes a lot of practice!
